God is in the Mind
The Big Metaphor
The purpose of religion is not to appease
or pleasure a personal God, but to change human experience and to
expand our perceptions of what life is about. God is a metaphor for
greater being and further evolution of consciousness. In fact, God is
the mind. This is not really a derogation of God. Indeed, in a way,
it’s a proof of God. But it does move God out of the heavenly throne
room and into psychological and cerebral space.
God is an artifact of the brain structures and neuronal activity of the
human mind because the brain is the physical manifestation of
consciousness and is “programmed” with clues to what consciousness
really is. God is a clue the brain gives itself to its own future. As
Arthur C. Clarke proposed, the idea of God predicts—and enables—the
evolution of greater consciousness and reveals our roles as conscious
beings in the universe.
The image of God you hold in mind and believe affects how you live and
how you feel about life. Indeed, the point of believing in God is to
shape how you live and to make your experience of life meaningful and
joyful. Some images and metaphors are more effective at conveying this
than others.
Metaphors for God
It makes sense to say God is like America. We Americans are part of
America. We can truly say we love being Americans and we love America.
But America is not a personal being. The personality we might imagine
in thinking about “the national character,” symbolized by the figure of
Uncle Sam and historically associated with George Washington, is
really in us, not out there. We don’t pray to America or expect America
to work miracles on our behalf out of personal concern for us as
individuals, but we do understand that the American experiment in
democracy has granted us virtually miraculous boons. We might give our
allegiance to America, devote our labor to making America successful
and even die to defend her (note the personal pronoun).
To extend the analogy: Just as we see that our government isn’t
America, so we see that religion and the Church aren’t God. Opposing
the government by mobilizing to protest governmental error and abuse
can be a way to show patriotism and to force government to adapt and
address real problems. We’re better Americans because we want change.
In the same way, we’re better lovers of God because we mobilize to
protest the Churches and seek to force religion to adapt and recreate
itself—and its image of God—for the modern world.
God is Love
St. John the Evangelist, who called himself Jesus’s beloved, said: “God
is Love.” Perhaps he had experienced an intense realization of the
imago Dei through his relationship with Jesus.
Love is an abstraction, an idea about an experience, and an
interpretation of deep human feelings and psychological bonds. Love is
not a personal being. The notion that emotional attraction to other
people is caused by arrows shot by Cupid is clearly a metaphor. There
is no personal Cupid. Love is recognizing a common identity with
another person and therefore wanting the person to be part of your
life. You feel a connection. You care. It is recognition in the other
of common identity in the greater Self—what is metaphorized as God.
The desire to be one with God is the desire to be loved, an actual
physical necessity for conscious beings, just like the necessity of
food or air. That’s why God is metaphorized so commonly as both food
and breath. God is love. That doesn’t mean God is a personal being who
experiences emotional attractions and feels affection and desire.
Rather, it means the feelings that we have as human beings when we care
about other people are participation in the universe longing for
harmony and abundant life. For love is the desire for harmony,
for the smooth unfolding of change (i.e., the expansion of space-time).
Love is the intention that there be no suffering and the motivation,
out of compassion and enlightened self-interest, to help others who are
suffering.
The need to be loved—to be touched—is part of the process by which the
nervous system grows in the matrix of energy fields generated by other
beings. Without touch, human children wither and die just as if they
had been deprived of sustenance. The desire to touch and to be touched
is not an urge born of selfishness and ungodly lust; rather, it is the
longing of life to live and be healthy—and to participate in the
generation of energy fields. The satisfaction of the desire to be
touched and loved is God.
The
Big Bang was God’s
paroxysm of passion
for existence
Love can be sparked by a variety of factors: common interests, mutual
devotion to a cause, friendship or kinship. Of course, in modern
American culture, love usually refers specifically to sexual
attraction and to familial bonds.
The metaphor God is love means that the universe intends for life to
succeed and for human beings to flourish. We can see that “God is
love”: Everywhere life blossoms. The Earth is verdant and fertile. With
each breath, every creature on the planet sings out the song of joy at
being alive. Surely, life intends to thrive and be happy—it is the
expression of the cosmic expansion of matter and consciousness.
Indeed, “God is love” is a metaphor for the expanding cosmos. You might
say the Big Bang was God’s paroxysm of passion for existence.
Therefore, to love all humankind means to find common identity with all
other inhabitants of planet Earth. “God is love” enjoins us to find God
in that space in human consciousness where good will naturally arises.
It is the space beyond right and wrong, just and unjust, deserving and
undeserving—beyond judging. It’s willing happiness and good fortune for
all beings just because all beings are interconnected in such a way as
to form the Self of the universe.
