The Mann Ranch Seminars 1971-1976 How I learned Zen by Toby Johnson What I know of Zen I learned mostly from Huston Smith, the comparative religions scholar, and Katagiri Roshi, the Soto Zen teacher at the Minneapolis Zen Center in the 70s. Both of them taught seminars at the Mann Ranch in the early 1970s, and both conducted sitting sessions during their workshops. Part of Huston Smith's personal spiritual journey and study of comparative religion, for which he was famous because of his book The Religions of Man, republished now with the less male-dominant name The World's Religions (Plus). Smith loved to tell stories of his training in Zen in Japan and how his knees hurt, but he kept to the practice. And he therefore would lead the seminarians at his workshop in how to sit Zen. Huston taught us how to bow and say "Gassho" (i.e., hands-together). Dainin Katagiri was trained in Soto Zen, so I guess that is what I learned as Zen sitting. He taught us to stretch side to side and bow deep before beginning, and then to simply sit there and do nothing. I like Soto Zen because it teaches that there's nothing to do because everything and everybody is already enlightened and "This is It" and there's no place you need to go to instead. I.e., this reality we are experiencing right now IS heaven. I call what I do "zazen" and refer to my cushion and mat with the Japanese names, but I don’t think I really practice Zen Buddhism in any orthodox sense. BUT I have been doing it daily since 1981. Now at the end of  2019, that’s some 39 years, wow. I spent the summer of ’81 in North Carolina, assisting my friends Melinda and Elizabeth, whom I'd met at the California Institute of Asian Studies, clear the land for what would become Southern Dharma Retreat Center. Liz and Melinda meditated an hour twice a day. I joined them for the last 30 minutes of each session each day—and it changed my life. Another part of the Mann Ranch experience was being initiated—unofficially—to T.M. by a man named Wayne McEvilly, who actually came to the Mann Ranch as a Writing Teacher for a Creative Writing Workshop. He was also a concert pianist. (And though he died last year, there are several wonderful piano concerts he recorded on YouTube.) Forty-five years ago Wayne’d been a young hippie who was friends and correspondent with Anais Nin and taught writing at the Univ of Idaho. He’d just come from a week retreat in which he was initiated into Transcendental Meditation, and he was very enthusiastic. And so taught all of us in the Writing Workshop how to do the Maharishi Mahesh's T.M. practice—which the Beatles had just popularized—and to conjure up the memory of hearing your teacher speak aloud your mantra. He gave us all the same mantra, the one he’d been initiated with by an official T.M. teacher. From that workshop with Wayne McEvilly I started keeping a handwritten daily journal—and wrote my doctoral dissertation on using the Personal Journal as an adjunct to psychotherapy. I kept that journalling practice up till the early 80s when I got my first Apple II + and started using a computer. I don’t do T.M. style mantra meditation, but I do think of Wayne speaking the mantra to me each morning at the end of my 40 minutes. Then I ring the bell, blow out the candle, and recite the Memorare as I fold up the blanket I wrap myself with, and slide the zafu and zabuton back to the altar—a carved black lotus leaf stand on which sit a Tibetan vajra bell and a 350 year old vajra, which I fantasize in reincarnation mythology could have been “mine” in a previous incarnation in the Himalayas, hundreds of years ago. Johnson's book GAY SPIRITUALITY: The Role of Gay Identity in the Transformation of Human Consciousness won a Lambda Literary Award in 2000.

His  GAY PERSPECTIVE: Things Our [Homo]sexuality Tells Us about the Nature of God and the Universe was nominated for a Lammy in 2003. They remain in print.
