TWO SPIRITS: A STORY OF LIFE WITH THE NAVAJO

By Walter L. Williams & Toby Johnson

Twenty years after his influential and ground-breaking bestseller The Spirit and the Flesh: Sexual Diversity in American Indian Culture, historian-anthropologist Walter L. Williams has teamed with award-winning novelist Toby Johnson to write a novel of romance between a Civil War survivor and a Navajo berdache. Two Spirits: A Story of Life With the Navajo is a story of tragedy, oppression, and discrimination, but also an enlightening tale of love, personal discovery, and natural beauty.

Striking in its evocation of Navajo philosophy, culture and spirituality, this book illuminates the truth of prejudice to the largest tribe of indigenous people in the Americas. Full of suspense, plot twists, and endearing romance, Two Spirits will captivate readers with its positive approach to life and love.

Based in the historical facts of the fabled West, Two Spirits tells the adventure of a hapless young Virginian assigned as the Indian Agent on a Navajor reservation. He develops a romantic relationship with a Two-Spirit healer and comes to appreciate the plight of Native Americans and understand the variety of human faith, gender, love.

The Arch and Brown Foundation awarded the authors a development grant as part of their annual competition for Gay-positive Art Projects based on Historical Subjects.
