One of the
inimitable
characters in San Antonio's gay community is Toby & Kip's friend
Tom Nash.
Toby met Tom while working with Michael Stevens on The Calendar gay
community newsletter in San Antonio in the ealy 1980s.
Kip had already met Tom long before he and Toby Johnson became
partners. Kip tells the story of how Tom "rescued" him one night in a
gay bar when, as a very young man, he naively accepted a drink from an
older man, who turned out to expect more than a polite "thank you" in
response. Tom was standing nearby and saw what had happened and came to
Kip's defense. In those days, Tom was affectionately known as
"Mother."
Thomas Barton Nash is an avid geneologist. One of his great
skills--much to the consternation, sometimes, of his subjects--is to
query people about their personal and familial histories.
Tom is a successful real estate investor and commercial landlord in
San Antonio and a contributor to gay community causes.
Tom is one of Kip and Toby's oldest friends.
