Toby Johnson writes: I was honored to assist with the production of this book, and to have befriended Mel White in the process. He's a marvelous man, and his book is a lovely and sweet, and deceively serious, statement of deep spiritual truth about the gay experience.
I have a blurb in the Advance Praise section:
Gay people are not given myths through traditional culture with which we can explain our experience to ourselves. We have to create our own myths. Stories like Mel White’s Grace and Demion (which I had the good fortune to assist with editing) is a delightful and wise example of how to rearrange the old stories in order to create deeply meaningful, satisfying and revelatory personal myths.
Grace and DemionA Fable for Victims of Biblical Intolerance
by Mel White
Some readers might ask why Grace and Demion is subtitled "A Fable for Victims of Biblical Intolerance." They may think that "biblical intolerance" is an oxymoron. How can the Bible (something good) be used to cause intolerance (something bad)? In fact, for centuries the Bible has been misused to caricature and condemn lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Unfortunately it is still happening. Young LGBT Christians are often raised in homes where the Bible is quoted to support the tragic lie that homosexuality is a sickness and a sin. Feeling condemned by God (and their Christian families and friends) thousands of these LGBT people retreat to closets where the live in isolation, anger and despair.
The Fable of Grace (the Guardian Angel of God's LGBT children) and Demion (the little demon sent from hell to steal their souls) is my attempt to use humor, satire, and fantasy to help my LGBT sisters and brothers to realize that their sexual orientation is also a gift from God to be accepted, celebrated and lived with integrity. The story of their training (as a Guardian Angel and as a soul thief) moves back and forth between heaven (where Grace is being trained) to hell (where the Devil himself is preparing Demion.) Because heaven and hell are still being misused by Christians to scare LGBT people into "changing" I've taken the liberty to write a Fable that (hopefully) undermines the biblical misuse and scientific ignorance that continues to plague LGBT people, young and old alike and at the same time to create a picture of God who created Her LGBT children and loves them exactly as they are.
