Legend of the Rainbow Warriors

5 stars

This review originally appeared in White Crane Journal #53, Summer 2002
reviewed by Toby Johnson

There is an ancient myth theme that runs through the various—and varied—traditions of the Americas that foretold the coming of European white men and warned of the devastation they would bring to the land. The myth also promised though that sometime in the future, when the
devastation (especially as it was wrought upon the native peoples and upon the land itself) was at its worst, sensitive souls among peoples of all colors—peoples of the rainbow—would feel a calling of Spirit and come together to bring things back to proper balance, restore ecological
harmony—and thereby restore the Sacred Hoop of Life.

These souls, though they would do no violence and in fact would work to end violence, are called the Rainbow Warriors.

In this little book, new age journalist, Reiki healer and intentional community advocate, and straight man, Steven McFadden intelligently and insightfully explicates the myth of the Rainbow Warriors through profiles of Native American (and also Australian Aboriginal) healers and
teachers. And he proposes that that time of maximum devastation and ecological chaos—koyanisquatsi—is now!

He finds evidence for his proposal that the Rainbow Warriors are waking up to their sacred, “karmic” identity in the new age and ecological movements of the last thirty five years, offering Greenpeace (with its eco-activist ship aptly called The Rainbow Warrior), the rise in interest in
Native American spiritualities (including Mayan prophecies) and the events around the Harmonic
Convergence of mid-August 1987 as major examples.

McFadden’s analysis is interesting, nicely written, easily understandable, even compelling.
What he misses entirely, that readers of White Crane are likely to notice, is that the gay liberation/gay rights movement with its own rainbow identity and iconography is yet another piece of evidence that human consciousness is undergoing a transformation. McFadden does not include the gay movement—or even the women’s movement—in his vision of planetary awakening and transformation.

What the gay Rainbow Warriors add to the wisdom is that transcending gender roles and escaping the cycle of automatic reproduction helps save the world. (This is the insight that White Crane Journal strives to present each issue in the Bodhisattva Watch column: overcoming gender
is overcoming the distinction between time and eternity.)

But this is not to make McFadden wrong. After all, he sent a review copy of his book to White Crane saying he thought it would be of special interest to gay readers. It is to remind all of us, however, that the deep spiritual core of our movement for liberation from sex role conventions is almost completely obscured by the hoopla and sexual superficiality of contemporary mainstream gay community. That Steven McFadden didn’t automatically include us in his book (and that the Vatican is blaming us for its doctrinal and ascetical failures) is evidence there is still a whole dimension of gay identity that has yet to be brought to proper light. The public—and I think that
includes an awful lot of homosexuals as well—do not understand gay identity as anything more than a way of having sex.

This is a good book. It helps us see how to place our own issues in the larger issues of earth. And might call us to reclaim our own Rainbow Warrior identity by participating as openly gay in ecological efforts as well as in our private prayer/meditation. It’s a good companion to Gay Spirit Warrior by John Stowe—who does understand and proclaim the gay dimension of being a planetary citizen.
