Surviving and Thriving After a Life-Threatening Diagnosis: Second Edition

5 stars

This review of the first edition appeared in White Crane Journal #63 Winter 2004/05

This is a surprisingly wonderful book that I want to recommend highly. I say “surprisingly” because the title suggests such seriousness and specificity. You wouldn’t really expect a self-help book on dealing with life-threatening illness to be interesting reading unless you were in the situation the title addresses.

So I was a little slow in picking up the book after it was sent to me by the author, a past customer at both the bookstore and the B&B my partner Kip and I used to run in the Austin area. But I’d liked Bev Hall and her partner Janet. Both were U.T. professors and members of our extended social circle. I wanted to be supportive.

I really was surprised. The book is so much more than just self-help in the face of disease. The voice of the author is so welcoming and wise and the scope of her discussion so encompassing and so deeply spiritual, I found myself engrossed, even though right now the topic doesn’t apply to me. It’s the nature of human life that at any moment, though, the threat of serious illness and death may be just around the corner and it’s a good idea to prepare oneself. But that’s still talking about the book as the topic of its title, and it’s more than that.

Combining the author’s own experience of being diagnosed with a fulminating cancer and given a five year life expectancy (over 20 years ago) and her work as a nurse and counselor with other patients, including many HIV/AIDS patients, the book blends autobiography and case histories to tell a series of life-affirming stories about people who transformed and sometimes healed themselves through so-called “alternative approaches” (usually in conjunction with mainstream medicine), along with practical suggestions for how to repeat their positive experiences.

Hall declares: “The astonishing truth is that an abundance of evidence shows that nutrition, natural remedies, exercise, attitudinal changes, and such self care activities as imaging, meditation, energy work, prayer, and spirituality can cure disease. Surviving And Thriving is about using all means possible to go head to head with life-threatening disease in a way that will result in a longer life and an enhanced life, full of meaning and enjoyment.”

So there’s a chapter on nutrition and dietary supplements and on exercise and a regimen for healthy living. But more importantly there’re chapters on prayer, meditation, energy healing, visualization, and spirituality. The content isn’t exactly new, but it’s presented with such an understanding and loving voice that it all comes across as so sensible and actually accomplishable. The simple instructions for meditation have really had a positive effect in my own practice.

So I recommend this book to White Crane readers whether you’re personally in need of the advice right now or not. In a very practical way, it would make a great gift for a friend or relative who is facing life-threatening illness; it could truly make a difference in the quality of their health. But before you give it away, read it yourself. It’ll make a difference in your own life too.
