All throughout my webiste, I write about the Mahayana Buddhist character of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. I think this is great wisdom, a marvelous example of what religion should be about and a special sort of manifestation of the teachings of Jesus (without all the baggage of Christianity).

Avalokiteshvara is described as a handsome and attractive and androgynous young man who out of compassion renounces his own entry into nirvana in order to remain behind and help all sentient beings through the struggles of life. Indeed, he agrees to take on the karma of all sentient beings, so he really is the One soul reincarnating as everybody.

It's a wonderful image for gay men, because he's portrayed as so kind and generous and appealing precisely because he transcends gender. And in the myth transcending gender is presented as a clue to enlightenment and to the important spiritual discovery that we are living in heaven now.

Nate BerkusMajor cultural influence Oprah Winfrey occasionally has on her show a young Chicago interior decorator named Nate Berkus. It seems to me his appeal is precisely that of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.

Berkus is good-looking and appealling. Oprah sends him out to do makeovers of homes for deserving people. AND he is sort of penly gay. The story is that during the tsunami in Southern Asia on December 26, 2004, he and his boy friend were visiting Sri Lanka
and were washed into the ocean. Nate survived, but his boyfriend, Fernando Bengoechea, did not.

Fernando Bengoechea
Thousands of school children all over America sent letters of condolences to him through the Oprah Show.

What a wonderful step in the transformation of thought about what it means to be gay.

The real effort of the gay movement has to be to change how people perceive homosexuals. We should be seen as saints, not sinners. Spirituality and virtue should be thought of as gay traits, just like being good at arranging flowers or doing hair.

Toby Johnson, PhD is author of eight books: three non-fiction books that apply the wisdom of his teacher and "wise old man," Joseph Campbell to modern-day social and religious problems, three gay genre novels that dramatize spiritual issues at the heart of gay identity, and two books on gay men's spiritualities and the mystical experience of homosexuality. In addition to the novels featured elsewhere in this web site, Johnson is author of IN SEARCH OF GOD IN THE SEXUAL UNDERWORLD and THE MYTH OF THE GREAT SECRET (Revised edition): AN APPRECIATION OF JOSEPH CAMPBELL.

Johnson's Lammy Award winning book GAY SPIRITUALITY: The Role of Gay Identity in the Transformation of Human Consciousness was published in 2000.

His Lammy-nominated book  GAY PERSPECTIVE: Things Our Homosexuality Tells Us about the Nature of God and the Universe was published by Alyson in 2003.
